Antique Georgian Pinchbeck Collar, ca 1820
Our Notes
Pinchbeck's warm, tarnish-resistant glow made it the prized metal of early 19th-century English jewelry, allowing goldsmiths to create extraordinarily elaborate, lightweight pieces with the visual impact of high-carat gold. This magnificent Georgian collar is composed of repeating starburst links that take on an almost flower-like, organic quality, weaving together geometric precision with fluid, natural forms that lie comfortably flat against the collarbone.
Anchoring the piece is a dramatic barrel clasp adorned with intricate cannetille wirework, a signature technique of the 1820s inspired by fine filigree, and set with soft pink paste stones. The delicate filigree detail on the clasp provides a romantic counterpoint to the graphic, botanical rhythm of the collar. Completely original and exceptionally well-preserved, it is a brilliant example of Regency-era metalwork that brings effortless historic drama to any neckline.
