Once Upon a Time

An intimate portrait series starring the legendary British actress, and our dear friend, Helena Bonham Carter, who transforms into a fantastical, Georgian character in celebration of our 25th anniversary.

Just as fairytales are passed through generations, this campaign examines the long-lasting legacy of jewelry.

To commemorate a milestone as meaningful as Larkpsur & Hawk's 25th anniversary, Emily envisioned a campaign that would celebrate not only a legacy of craftsmanship and color, but also the creative friendships that have shaped its story.

As Emily explains: "When imagining how to memorialize the 25th anniversary of Larkspur & Hawk, I dreamt of enlisting my friend, the legendary British actress Helena Bonham Carter, to join in the celebration. The basis of our friendship revolves around a mutual esteem for each other. Helena came into my life because she loves the jewelry I create, and I have always admired her acting career. While we work in very different fields, we are both creative, and as such, I could not have imagined a better foundation for producing this fairytale of a campaign."

A Serendipitous Beginning

Helena's relationship with Larkspur & Hawk began by chance, sparked by a twist of fate that turned into a lasting friendship. As Helena recounts: "I think I first fell in love with Larkspur & Hawk in London many years ago. I can’t remember the exact date, but I have always loved Georgian colors and the foiling. To my great distress, I lost an earring, and when I had to come to New York, I thought to make contact to see if I could buy one instead of a pair. I was also intrigued to meet the designer behind these color concoctions. I suspected I’d fall in deep like, and we did. I feel as if Emily has stepped straight out of the world of Edith Wharton. I like the idea that through the loss of an earring, we found each other. Then began my compulsive collecting of Larkspur & Hawk. They make me happy. It’s the chemistry of the color combining and the foiling.”

A World of Color, Character, & Charm

The theme brought to life in the new photo series is a nod to the Georgian period with a contemporary flare in much the same way that Larkspur & Hawk’s designs are rooted in history, and provide a window to a bygone era, but with a modern twist. "For a brand that is so inspired by 18th century England, it was no coincidence that this campaign was shot in a Regency setting, and with almost all British talent," says Emily. "Leading up to the shoot, Helena and I spent time collaborating to hone the creative direction, imagining how we could make the most of this unimaginable opportunity."

"What I love about jewelry is how it can out survive us humans, carrying stories over the decades, and over the centuries," says Helena. "I love how a piece can evoke a whole atmosphere, and a new internal weather. I also love dressing up, and make believe is what I do for a living, so when Emily asked if I’d be up for a commemorative photoshoot…”

Helena had the unique vision to embrace her shoot persona with fantastical, soft pastel pink hair. Her stylist created the romantic, and ever so slightly rock-and-roll look to match the pink foil used in Larkspur & Hawk’s jewelry.

"I think pink is known to stimulate serotonin," says Helena, "so it’s basically an antidepressant hair color. My oldest friend is a genius hairdresser/designer, Carol Hemming, and she shares my love of play, and time travel.  We also know the pale greys, pinks, and blues of Georgian wigs are so flattering, and I’ve always wanted to do something in that period but never have. If you ever want to look more beautiful than you actually are, then Morag Ross is the make-up lady you want."

A Fairytale 25 Years in the Making

What began as a shared appreciation for color and history evolved into a creative partnership that feels nothing short of cinematic. As Emily recalls: "On shoot day, seeing Helena wear the new 25th anniversary Palette collection was surreal!  It is the culmination of 25 years of my work, and she looked like she stepped right out of the most magical fairytale, glowing in Larkspur & Hawk jewelry. What I could not have prepared myself for was the experience of seeing her inhabit a character in each look through her facial expressions and movements. Everything she does when she is in character she does with gusto, even when it is starring in an anniversary campaign for me. We had an unforgettable day on set – laughing, working, and creating with our team of almost all women!"

A Colorful Legacy

One of the most sentimental parts of this shoot was being joined by Helena’s beautiful daughter, Nell. Together, with her mother, we captured several poignant images that illustrate a metaphor of legacy via a piece of jewelry that is destined to span generations. Nell wears Helena’s Sadie rivière, one of her most prized pieces in her personal Larkspur & Hawk collection. The rivière is especially meaningful to Helena since it was a gift from her mother.

“I rarely want anything for my birthday, but some years ago, my mother wanted to buy something for the occasion and I knew exactly what," says Helena. "We both came to the Larkspur & Hawk showroom in New York, and it was then that I chose the (Sadie Crazy Quilt) rivière, which I pretty much wear daily. It’s like a bunch of sweeties, or in American, candy. It gives me a lift no matter whatever mood I'm in. Also, as it’s from my mum, it feels I’m carrying a bit of her wherever I go.”

“The name rivière is particularly fortuitous as mum is French, and a river has a poetic symbolism of forever flowing, which seems right for an heirloom as it’s passed from mother to daughter. One day it will be on to my own daughter, Nell, if she doesn’t steal it before! I’ve also recently become addicted to a song called The Baton by Katie Gavin about the relay between generations of mothers and daughters. My rivière will be our baton.”

A Celebration of Friendship and Legacy

"It has been a total delight for me to see Helena wear her Larkspur & Hawk pieces in both her personal and professional lives, a testament to the power and comfort fine jewelry beholds. Working with Helena on this celebratory campaign is evidence that jewelry beholds the power to bring strangers together."
