Antique Grand Tour Pendant Earrings, ca 1860
Our Notes
Largely due to Napoleon and his conquests in Italy in 1796, cameos came into fashion in Europe at the turn of the 19th century. Napoleon was fond of jewelry and especially fond of jewelry as a political statement. As such, upon his Italian victories, he opened a gem carving school in Paris, bolstering the popularity of cameos, something that will remain throughout the century.
These earrings center on Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and vegetation; she is recognized by her personal attributes as well as the blossom that dangles above her head. A 19th century interest in Classical history and archaeology drove the urge to wear jewelry that honored the past and demonstrated intelligence. True to the Revival styles seen in goldwork, these shell cameos are framed by gold with an applied swag decoration. Elongated, and elegant, these earrings are so fun to wear.
