Antique Giardinetti Earrings, ca 1780
Our Notes
In the Georgian period, giardinetti meant 'little garden,' and was a popular theme that was usually depicted as tiny baskets overflowing with colorful gemstone flowers. These take a different approach—monochromatic pyrite creating an abstract, metallic floral composition. Pyrite has a unique quality. It doesn't shine like glass or metal, it glitters like grey, rose cut diamonds.
In candlelight, this effect was hypnotic. The stones catch light from unexpected angles, creating flashes of brightness in a dark setting. Set in silver, the whole composition becomes a study in texture and contrast. The craftsmanship is remarkable. Each tiny pyrite piece is individually set, creating dimension and movement.
