Antique Cannetille Earrings, ca 1810
Our Notes
Popularized in the 1820s when gold was scarce across post-Napoleonic Europe, cannetille wirework allowed goldsmiths to create large, intricate silhouettes with remarkable lightness. These Italian earrings feature delicate gold scrolling coils, rosettes, and granulated beads arranged in a crisp diamond-shaped lattice. Accentuated with vibrant pink paste set in crimped collets throughout the openwork composition, the pair exemplifies Regency-era goldsmithing at its most meticulous.
Equipped with period-correct back-to-front ear wire fittings, the earrings thread securely from behind the lobe. The open lattice work creates architectural depth while maintaining comfortable wear, preserving a quintessential example of early 19th-century Italian regional metalwork.
